LATAH SOIL AND WATER CONSERVATION DISTRICT

Youth Outreach

The Latah Soil and Water Conservation District supports various activities aimed at the youth of Latah County. The goal is to enhance their appreciation of our natural resources by offering hands-on workshops and contests.

Conservation Awareness Days

Conservation Awareness Days is an annual event hosted by the Latah Soil and Water Conservation District and sponsored by local organizations and businesses. Since 1986 the two-day event has taken place at Spring Valley Reservoir near Troy. Fifth and sixth grade public, private, and home-schooled students from all over Latah County are welcome. Students spend the day participating in fun-packed, hands-on workshops given by experts in fish and wildlife, forestry, soils, macroinvertebrates, search and rescue, and raptors.

Poster and Speech Contests

The Idaho Association of Soil Conservation Districts (IASCD) sponsors annual poster and speech contests for elementary and high school students throughout Idaho. Every autumn students are invited to display their artistic and communication skills at four levels of competition: District, Division II, State, and National. Cash prizes are awarded at each level.

The Latah Soil and Water Conservation District (Latah SWCD) hosts the District level contest. Latah County high school students present their speeches at the Federal Courthouse in Moscow, Idaho. Fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students display their posters at the Latah County Courthouse. Winners of the District competition move on to Division II.

The Division II level contest is held during the Division II meeting of the IASCD and is open to students from Latah, Clearwater, Nez Perce, Lewis, and Idaho counties. The winners move on to the State competition that takes place during the annual IASCD conference held in Boise, Idaho. The winner of the State poster contest is invited to attend the National contest held in Washington, D.C.
