Mystery Plant Contest Answers

Here are the answers to recent Mystery Plant Contests published in The Working Conservationist.
Spring 2008 edition

Mystery Wildflower 1

Arrowleaf Balsamroot (scientific name: Balsamorhiza sagittata).  "Sagittata" means "arrow-leaved" and refers to the shape of the leaves.

Mystery Wildflower 2

Fernleaf Lomatium (scientific name: Lomatium dissectum).  "Dissectum" means "many times parted" and is a good description of the shape of the leaves.

For information on how Native Americans used these plants, see the database of foods, drugs, dyes, and fibers derived from plants at http://herb.umd.umich.edu/.  The best search strategy would be to use the scientific name.
